Writer's Block: Love is deaf

Could you spend the rest of your life with someone who had horrific taste in music? How important is it to you to share your love of music with a good friend or romantic partner?

Erik and I both definitely have a very deep love of music. No arguing that point. We do, however, have different tastes.

Erik loves metal. I...have been learning. I used to pretty much dismiss the whole lot of it as unlistenable noise. And while some of it actually is like that, I do like a good deal of it. It's really only the super-growly/screamy deathmetal stuff I have a real problem getting into, mostly because it's so loud and after a while the drums start to sound off-beat and it's like powertools clunking around in my head. I enjoy a lot of the other subgenres, though, and of course all the classic metal bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Metallica. And I loves me some Dio. Erik really has broadened my musical horizons. I wish I could say that I've done the same for him, but I just don't see him getting into Imogen Heap or Allison Krauss any time soon.

Also, just to clarify, metal is not the only thing he listens to. And we actually have a great number of bands in common. I like to think we're the same in the middle-ish area of the music spectrum, and then I continue on deep into Iron & Wine territory while Erik extends out into Lamb of God space. If that makes any kind of sense to anyone besides me. I think I need sleep!

One of the best things anyone has ever told me was, "Kimmy, you're the only person I know who has Marilyn Manson right next to Mandy Moore one their iPod."

Hehe! Music is wonderful! :D And while I have only heard a handful of Iron & Wine songs, I love what I have heard!

I just read this entry aloud to Tim because I myself spent about a full minute laughing about it ;) My music tastes are very much like yours and Tim is an absolute metal head. Your description of powertools clanging around in your head made him grin and nod as that is apparently the point. IDGI, either
